My APR Journey: Samantha Holsten, APR
When PRSA Orlando asked Samantha Holsten, APR, what inspired her to pursue Accreditation in Public Relations (APR), she reflected on her passion for professional growth and leadership.
“I owe a lot of the motivation to several PRSA members encouragement and providing support and resources.
Her journey to fulfill her goal of attaining accreditation offers helpful insight to anyone considering this credential.
What motivated you to pursue the APR?
Since entering the University of Central Florida Advertising/Public Relations major in 2014 and the start of my PR career post-graduation in 2016, I had my sight set on earning my accreditation. It has been a career goal of mine.
How did you prepare for the panel presentation and examination?
- Start your questionnaire prior to applying.
- Lean on the support of other APRs to review your questionnaire and presentation.
- Present your presentation at a mock panel.
- Anticipate panel questions.
- Review the study guide and study with the method that works best for you. I have never been a flash card person. My way of studying is to rewrite the entire study guide information in my own words and re-read that several times. My goal was to study one hour a day over the span of three weeks leading up to the test.
I highly recommend doing the mock panel to get the nerves out and receive critical feedback on how to improve your campaign presentation.
What was the most challenging part of the process, and how did you overcome it?
Ensuring I have all pieces of RPIE (Research, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation) well represented and organized properly.
How has earning your APR impacted your career or perspective on the profession?
It has truly opened my eyes to strategic communications and how to ask the right questions prior to starting a campaign and looking at it in a big picture lens as opposed to getting the work done.
What advice would you give to someone considering the APR?
Reach out for advice and support from other APRs. You will be surprised how seamless your campaigns can already fit into the RPIE model.
What’s one key takeaway or lesson you gained from the experience?
Pursuing your APR is a more affordable and practical way to further enhance your career without going back to school.
