My APR Journey: Andy Wontor, APR, EPIO

Many communications professionals view the path to Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) as both a personal challenge and a significant professional milestone.

As Public Information Division Manager at Seminole County Government, Andy Wontor, APR, EPIO, saw the journey as an opportunity to build on her television news background while strengthening her strategic foundation in public relations.

In this Q&A, she shares what motivated her to pursue the APR, how she prepared for the process, and the lessons she gained along the way—along with advice for PRSA Orlando members considering the credential.

What motivated you to pursue the APR?

I pursued the APR to challenge myself and strengthen my foundation as a public relations professional. With a background in television news, I hadn’t been formally trained in PR strategy or terminology, and the APR process helped me gain a deeper understanding of both.

How did you prepare for the panel presentation and examination?

I did my panel presentation on Paws & Claus, a recent Silver Anvil Award–winning adoption event my team put together with Seminole County Animal Services. It was a project that meant a lot to me, so talking through the strategy and results felt very natural.

The exam was a different story as I hadn’t studied like that in years! I leaned heavily on the study guide—reading it, re-reading it, and making sure I truly understood the material rather than just memorizing it.

What was the most challenging part of the process, and how did you overcome it?

Carving out time to study! I carried the Study Guide with me on trips to try to force that extra reading time while stuck in the airport terminal or riding the Brightline.

How has earning your APR impacted your career or perspective on the profession?

Earning my APR has sharpened my strategic thinking and reinforced the importance of intentional, thoughtful communication—especially in government and public service.

What advice would you give to someone considering the APR?

Just go for it!

What’s one key takeaway or lesson you gained from the experience?

It’s important to understand why we communicate – and not just how.
