Orange County Public Schools is the 18th largest school district in the nation and the fourth largest in the state. With more than 24,000 employees, it is one of the largest employers in Central Florida. The OCPS Public Relations Department is responsible for all internal and external communications as well as brand management. The department is seeking a talented communicator to join its award-winning team.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to use effective communications and public relations strategies and practices; working knowledge of Associated Press style; ability to expertly proofread and edit materials created by others; analytical skills to review information and formulate alternative solutions to problems; ability to plan projects and utilize effective time management skills; ability to work as part of the team, departments, and senior leadership. Must possess proficient computer skills including, but not limited to, spreadsheets, document processing, presentation software, and social media platforms; ability to manage project calendars and timelines; ability to apply acquired knowledge, skills, and abilities to new situations; ability to regularly use independent judgment and discretion in matters related to business operations and management policies. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.

The position will also use social media as directed by leadership to respond in cases of urgent communication and create accurate accounts of district or school decisions or responses. Some duties may occur in the evening, before school opens, and on weekends.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manifest a professional code of ethics and values.
  • Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.
  • Model the routine, intentional and effective use of technology in daily work, including communications, organization, and management tasks.
  • Collaborate with the Administrator, Social Media in the execution of marketing/ communication plans for district initiatives.
  • Draft editorial and marketing content about the district, its employees, schools and students for distribution and publicity in district media and on social media platforms.
  • Collaborate with the Administrator, Social Media with maintaining and growing the School District’s social media presence through a variety of posts, interactive engagements, and strategic approaches.
  • Serves as a resource to designated social media managers at school sites and divisions and departments within the School District to assist in the creation of official social media pages related to Orange County Public Schools.
  • Work closely with the school-based administrators on the implementation of targeted student recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Conduct research and compile content for presentations to external and internal audiences for informational and promotional purposes, using audio, video, visual, web-based, and other mediums.
  • Create publications for distribution to employees, civic, business and community groups and the general public to promote public understanding of district vision, goals, operations and programs, and public awareness of district achievements.
  • Prepare speeches, articles, letters and scripts for the superintendent and school board members.
  • Coordinate recognition of students, parents, volunteers, and community organizations by the school board, as may be assigned.
  • Manage and support district-sponsored events such as school dedications, school board meetings, employee recognitions and special activities, as needed.
  • Follow the district’s policies and procedures as related to all HRMD guidelines and the district’s instructional initiatives.
  • Follow the district’s policies and procedures as related to fixed assets.
  • Develop leadership in subordinates.
  • Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology being used by OCPS. With the support of the district, attend training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field from an accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential job functions. One year of experience in communications, public relations, or a related field. One year of experience managing social media accounts and/or websites.

STARTING SALARY:

$49,285 - $66,453
